Well, the header gaskets are currently the least of my worries, lol.

This morning on my way to work, the trans decided it wanted to have a bunch of neutrals and nothing more. So out came the wasted th400 and the behemoth np203. Tomorrow, new parts will be going in. Hopefully I can get it going again... this is the truck that I'm taking to Richmond IN on Friday.
Are you sure the TH400 went all neutrals instead of the 203 busting a chain? I definitely would have thought the 203 would go LONG before a TH400.

New trans or you rebuilding yourself?

Back when I got the truck 13 years ago, I aquired a th400 core and an np205 to have my favorite trans shop (Metro Transmission in Columbus OH) go through because I wanted to get rid of the np203. It's been under the work bench (in 3 different garages now, lol) ever since, just waiting for me to use it. I feared that after sitting so long, it may not work properly, but it turns out that it does.

Yep, positive. A while back, the pump started to whine. I put in a bottle of Lucas and it was fine. Tuesday morning, the whine came back, but louder. A few minutes later, the trans died. I was able to limp it at a crawl for about a mile, but then it said fock you and gave up completely. Also, the fluid that came out looked like this:

NP203...yuck! Run it if it's all you have tho. I've got a couple TH350/NP203 around the farm but much rather have an NP205. It's tough finding all the stuff for conversion too for TH400. I've got one of the TH400/NP203 combos out in the bushes somewhere.

I've got a crazy ass idea to run the 203 that I just pulled, but drill the face for the round pattern and bolt it to an A833 overdrive 4 speed. Then put it in my '77 K5 in place of the th350/203.

Damn, that looks like you had water in it somehow. Did the cooler in the radiator go out?

No water, it's just the lighting. All that glittery stuff in there reflects the LED shop lights well. Just a couple days before, the fluid had a normal color to it.

I had a '72 K5 years back that had a side-cover 4-speed & Dana T-case with no low range. Never seen another. I did have an '82 K10 with the OD 833 but it's long gone. I have a 2WD version of the 833 still tho. The shifter is laying in my K2500HD now...

huh, what the heck would glitter up like that in a 400? My 6L80 did that when the converter clutch wore out, but I've never seen a 400 do that. Pump broke maybe? I wonder if you had a plugged filter or leaky filter seal letting air in.. maybe cavitate the pump?

Beats me. All the silvery glittery stuff is aluminum particles I believe. Other than the pump whine type noise, it shifted perfectly right up until it didn't shift at all.

I'd assume the filter wasn't plugged since there was enough line pressure to shift properly. Isn't the filter seal below fluid level?
