You mean to tell me that you actually found a place that rebuilds starter motors? I thought they were a thing of the past (like magazines), good to hear!

Bigger cities still have starter/alternator shops and you can still find a radiator shop as well. They usually these days mostly work on. Big equipment and trucks I would imagine.

Nope, just highway driving. The pinion seal was bad and i ran it outta oil. It was so hot it was smoking! It was aslo screeching so loud that i heard it over my loud exhaust and the radio.

Probably pinion bearings, as you said noise occurred in straight line driving. If it was smoking, be prepared to replace all bearings and seals. I would also inspect the carrier and gears for signs of overtemp.

We have a local shop that does great work and is very reasonably priced. They are also honest about if you would be better off buying a new starter over having yours rebuilt.

I once took a large truck starter to them and they returned it cleaned and painted, no charge, it was just dirty inside. Worked great!

I have a great little shop in town that does alternators and starters. I trust their guy to rebuild them rather than take a chance on one from a parts chain store. I get my batteries from them too. Shop local!

It's trial and error really.

Personally, I don't mess around with the plastic bb's. I like to run 16oz in each tire (big tires, not passenger car tires) and it's less bb's if I use the steel ones. Plus, they make a funny noise when you come to a stop if you have steel rims, lol. It probably wears on the tires some, but it's not noticeable in an occasional driver.

I've heard about golf balls too, but never knew if it was true.
