I need a valve seal job done so I picked up a set of these things to throw on there when that's finished. They came in the mail today. I think they are from the early 70's.

I need to get down to Hoschton, sometime LOL. I kinda know my way around down there since I was on the crew that built and maintained Reunion golf club. That area, much like Buford and *******, has pretty much exploded in growth over the last 20 or so years.
You might be the only person not from here that knows about it lol. Dude it’s exploded big time. I think reunion was just getting started when I was in highschool. It’s probably tripled around here since then. My parents live on the backside of Hamilton Mill toward Braselton. I work in Gainesville and plan to move up that way later this year/early next. But this whole northeast side is booming like crazy

@Vbb199 Nice pics, was gonna jump you about the "book" and no, pics, but there they are!...Also, only saw ONE lonely Miller cap and no sign of the liquid refreshment!! WTH!!!

I think MillerCoors may have been partly responsible for some of the past issues...lol.

1 and 2. Excellent job passing down the knowledge and training the young lad to not be a cheeto eatin video game pilot! (Nothing against him personally, but most of my kids' friends are glued to that ****** Xbox).
3. I wish you were closer to teach me how to set up a differential and rebuild an auto trans....those are 2 things I've never tackled. Sorta like being the captain of the baseball team and not being able to swing a bat, I am.


4. I hope you got her all sorted out now, for your sake. We've all had those frustrating job so nice I have to do it twice projects, and you've had a run at this one.

5. You're a better man than me. By this stage of the game with your bad luck with the Burb, I would have checked that I had good comp insurance and probably lit a match to it....I mean it might have had an "electrical" issue that resulted in a total loss payout!

6. I'll see your check ball and raise you a valve shim. Few years ago I seized the top end on my YZ450. (Leaving one oil drain plug hand tight and then running the guts out of it in 6' of snow until the drain plug falls out will definitely cause an issue.) After ******* move #1, not tightening both drain plugs after an oil change, I was putting the valvetrain back together and dropped a valve shim. I SWORE I heard/saw it pinball OUT of the engine and heard it hit the floor. After searching for an hour it seemed, on a perfectly clean floor, it was MIA.
Gave up, bought a new shim.
Finished assembly and realized the timing chain follower was not seated right in the bottom of the case. After taking it apart to fix the follower, guess what I saw sitting in the bottom of the case?
Yup!
Had I not fcked up the follower and gone and fired it up, there's about a 98% chance I would have absolutley destroyed the bottom end with an errant little steel disk.
(Which coincidentally was perfectly fine, as was the valvetrain, even though I ran the crankcase dry at about 11,000rpms!)

7. That last story was to make you feel better, since your issues were mostly not self inflicted!

1 and 2. I have 2 girls, currently at 5 and 7.
Im better off with a 15 year old boy haha

Hes a good boy, hes learned all kinds of good stuff considering "dad" is the type who installs pads on backwards. I have a brother, but hes mr goody 2 shoes, total millenial, cant get his hands dirty.
I figure should my kids not be interested, i will pass my tools, knowledge, and legacy onto my brother in law, cameron.

3. It takes time, and patience, but you save alot of money afterwards :)

4. So far so good, no big frustrations, but driving her!

5. I dont want to give up on it because a. Its the family truck b. Giving up on them is the reason they become more and more valuable everyday.

Ok, so idk where i last left off, seeing as activity here from me isnt as much as it once was.

Basically, my transmission lost reverse, the whining i was hearing originally was pinion bearings from my girl falling off the lift. We've heard that story a hundo times. Old ****.

I popped my cover to check my gears out all to learn the side gears and spider gears of the original G80 unit had excessive slop. I welded those together temporarily, ordered a cool new Yukon Duragrip Posi.

Brought thr truck to a buddies house after the yukon came, took my axle apart to install it, learned the yukon/eaton/auburn etc carrier journal bearings are bigger than stock 8.5/8.6 journals.

While i was at it, i inspected pinion bearings to learn the source the whine, somehow or another, after that fateful fall, the inner pinion bearing got racked really hard and stayed there, thus causing the inner cone bearing to get jammed into its race, causing that god awful whining. For the time being, i knocked that **** out, installed the original stock bearings in. Put my welded carrier back in until i had the correct bearings.

Problemo solved for the time being, still leaving me with a welded rear, and no reverse, but no whine.


K. Fastforward to this past weekend, i bring her back with correct bearings in hand.

I do rear end first, meaning, setting up my new yukon with my fresh 4.10s i installed 2 months or so ago. Replaced pinion bearings also. Set preload at like, 18 in/lbs, idr

Done, and done.

I got .007 backlash. ez.


Buttoned that up, pulled my trans.
Pop the pan, and to my horror, i find chunks of clutch in it . Eeeeek. Thats horrible breh.
I assume originally i lost reverse due to a failed input seal on the pump stator.

I go ahead and give her a good teardown (again), i inspect 2, 3, and 4 clutches, no problemo.

So.... i had to go even further... reach the bottom of the trans to find clutches and steel packs for low/rev that were warped, and in some cases fricition welded together.

The problem?

The VB gaskets were for a 82-86 non Aux VB 700r4.
The low reverse circuit, which is fed by the aux vb was completely blocked off. noice!

Just another L, amirite? Thx for that whoever you are.

So, i called her quits for the night.

Visit my local trans store for more red eagle low/rev clutches, and kolen steels and the CORRECT vb gaskets for a 87+ aux vb 700r4.

No prob.

I flush everything from the trans and TC, replace input drum seals, stator seals. Install my new low/rev clutches, air check my apply pistons. All is right in the world.

Put it back together, and at the end, i learned i lost a 1/4" check ball... eh.... i didn't install 1 too many... i just lost the damn thing because i had them accounted for upon teardown, so idk where it went. Anywho. I finish install, leave aux vb off, go ahead and install trans. Blah blah blah.

Drive BACK to my house from my buddies in the driving rain and lightning, grab a checkball from my trans parts collection, come back to buddies shop. Install aux vb, aux vb feed line, filter, then pan.

Fill her up, fire her up, i wet all my clutches by cycling shifter.....all gears are stout as can be... reverse makes the ass squat. Yayyyy.

I drove home that night on a yukon, and a tranny thats back to smackin gears like a MF, WITH reverse.
Win, win, win, win, win.


Then over the course of this week, MORE problems arose lol.

Started out with headlight/door buzzer staying on when i turned headlights on, then hard starting, then gauges failed, and ended in me needing a jump one night at a buddies house, and on the drive home, truck running like ass, and wouldnt crank back up when i parked it. This was over a perod of a couple days.

Thanks for that suburban.


Replaced alt with a delco. Warrantied battery out, still no gauges. Bleh.

Checked the gage/idle fuse. Found it was blown. Fixed.

And thus, where we lie now? Back to square one, where i was 2 months ago.

Chasing the vacuum leak ghost, and pulling ECM data to correct my gas mileage, and power issues.

I will get back to that soon.


All in all, my sanity really suffered.

Where we lie now ? A good charging system, a good rear end on 4.10s and yukon, and a stout trans.


The lesson learned?

1. Dont let your truck fall off the lift after installing new gears.
2. Dont let someone else unless you trust them build your transmission.



From here, on a sunny day, i will pull my intake as im left with no other option than to be suspicious of a possible ex leak under the intake. (She sat for 10 years before i got my hands on it)

While im at it, bore my intake for the 46mm tbi i machined, reseal it all, setup the 46mm tbi, and get the true potential my screaming eagle sbc has.

Better late than never, right? Installed the ORD steering box brace. I made the mistake of bead blasting and painting it first thing, not knowing I'd have to put it on and take it off a bunch of times while I made clearance notches for lines and hoses. By the time I got it dialed in it needed another coat of paint. Technically, it's a bolt-in part, but I had to massage the hell out of it to make it fit.
