That sucks sorry to hear that, reminds me of my neighbor did the same thing about 8yrs ago, let his car sit for almost 2yrs and just put some gas in and fire it up and it started knocking within seconds. Since oil runs away it was dry, let oil sit in the pan and it separates so what is left is like water, never even built up pressure before starting so it was a dry start. So he brings the motor to me to look at it, tore it down and all the bearings were wiped out from a dry start, and it grabbed two rod bearings and spun which is where the knocking came from, that was a shame because the motor was clean as can be, if he would have drained the oil and put a fresh batch in and build up pressure and have good oil flowing all through the motor that wouldn't have happened..

there a procedure or is it as simple as you said it? I've got a 86 buick regal I'm lookin at for $1200 thats in awesome shape except it hasn't been run in a few years.

I always put a fresh batch of oil in it, pop the valve covers and distributor and prime it until oil is flowing at all the rockers, button it all back up, squirt a few drops of oil in the cylinders and rotate it by hand a few times, then fire it up.
