I don't recall where I posted it, but I posted about a guy who was looking for a 700r4 Core to trade for his broke Th400 Core, then emailed me and called it off said, his bellhousing was broke. I told him, it's cool, I'd take the broken trans case core cuz I just need a 6 bolt pump and a drum to complete 2 other transmissions.
I made that trade and finally got around to pulling it apart. Mind you, this Th400 came from a 92 1/2 ton GMT 400 truck that was originally a 700r4, but the guy had bought it recently and wanted to change back to 700r4 anyway. Point is, he didn't know the history of the trans.
Got'r all tore apart and I have bad news for that guy. He had said, he heard some clunking under the truck. Stopped at a light and it quit. Took off from the light and heard a big bang and a jerk and that was it, the TRANS was broke and junk at that point and had it towed home. The bad news is, he THINKS it's his trans. He gave me the driveshaft, so I know it's not that, and when he get his 700r4 rebuilt and installed that he traded me for, he's going to find out he broke his rear end, not his trans. This trans is beautiful inside. Not a think broke. The seals are soft, fluid is a gorgeous shade of red.
No Joke, I didn't clean a thing here, didn't even wipe it off. Just took it apart and this is what it looks like.
You see the little bit of black that ran to the edge of the pan... That is what I call break in sludge. It's clutch material that is usually about the size of a nickel, maybe quarter that is usually present after about 400-500 miles. It's never even enough worth pulling the pan to clean it out. Very common and normal. If you ever open up a trans and see something like that, don't even sweat it. now if it has metal shavings or shiney stuff, them maybe a bit to worry about, but even then if it's very little, might just be a tight bushing or new thrust washer finding it's home.
Pump bushings and pump gasket are new and clean. Transtec is good quality gaskets, also aftermarket which tells me the trans was rebuilt.
