My mom has decided that she no longer needs her 1979 4x4 pick up and wants me to have it. It has been sitting in the New Mexico desert for the last 4 years without being driven.

I am thinking of flying down and changing the belts, hoses, and fluids and driving it back to Colorado. The trip would be about 450 ish miles.

My mom is the original owner from day 1 the paint is faded and there are a few dings after all these years but over all the the truck is complete and has never had a reliability problem

Sound a like a fun adventure?

What other things should I check before heading out?

No matter how much stuff you fly down there with you'll need something you didn't bring. I'd bring it back with a flatbed trailer or tow dolly.

Roadkill .. Watch it. Its on youtube. You'll learn the perils of old vehicles sitting for ages and going on a road trip.

As stated guaranteed you'll need MUCH MUCH more.

I would certainly take camping supplies, because that's what your going to be doing if it breaks down in the mountains.

Let's see...tires, battery, spare parts, tools, camping supplies, and beer. That should only cost you an extra $500 in luggage fees at the airport.

Edit: Better take an even $1000, you'll need extra for the stuff you forget.

All of the brake seals and hoses will be suspect.
I just finished a project that was last on the road Summer 2012. All the brakes had to be replaced to even pull out of the shop.

I was planning on shipping tools via FedEx.

If I do go for it I will be sure to take some pictures and video. I might end up with some YouTube gold.

As a 20 year employee of FedEx Ground I apologize in advance for losing half your tools and shipping the rest to Tulsa.

Lmao that's no joke. I'd just throw a set of sockets and a crescent wrench and a couple screw drivers in your bag.

Now that you got it home and had a chance to poke around a bit on it, do you think it would have made it? How did everything look? How much did you drive it?
