Guys, I have some vortec heads, centerbolt valve covers, ordered a cyclone intake manifold to work with the heads and the q jet.

Also ordered z28 valve springs which were recommended for rhe cam. The cam is duration 278/288 and lift .421/.444. Comes with lifters. Its an rv cam

Will this combo make a good difference in performance? Mainly lower speed towing. Going thru the gears it needs more power.

I need gaskets and thats it I think. Anything else? Will my stock head bolts work on the vortec heads? What about intake bolts?

My uncle suggested I get the timing chain gears that "will allow you to arvance or retard the cam. What is he talking about? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks yall.

Ps engine is 350 rebuilt with headers and duals no cats and a 4l80e

Roller is the ****, because unlike flat tappet, you can go higher lift and short duration.

That cam duration is a bit high for low end. There are kits that allow you to advance or retard the cam, which will move the power band around, but you need access to a dyno to do it right.
There is also an external timing belt kit, with special front cover, that allows you to change cam timing, without taking a bunch O **** apart. think of it as maual VVT. TBI heads would give you a tad more torque, but lag in the top end where the vortecs take over...that said, I have buzzed my TBI heads to over 5500. I would re think the cam selection, just remember, lower duration puts the torque where you need it. If you dont mind springing for a roller kit, the HT383 cam is a good choice, and is a step up from the stock vortec L31 cam.

Vortec heads are supposed to be a 40hp increase alone

If you use your truck to race Camaro's, yes...but they are very good truck heads.
Trucks are not built for speed.

those cam specs are NO WAT and "RV" cam that's a full blown nasty idle race car cam duration.

My guess it's adv. and not actual duration.

with that low lift I bet actual duration is close to 204 or under. Most rv cams I've seen have durations at .050 of like 204 and under maybe 210 or 214 at best.

Would run like crap until about 2000 rpm unless it is tuned for the heads.

Yup...thats what I was thinking. Would need to set the idle at 1000 rpm just to keep it running.

Really depends if it's "advertised" duration or actual measured at 0.050". I've seen RV cams with advertised durations that were nowhere near where you think it should be.
