Hi all. I recently purchased a 1990 crew cab dually. When I went to look at the truck it ran and drove pretty good. It was running off of a tank in the bed as the factory tanks and pumps were shot. So new tanks pump and switching valve and truck runs but won't idle for crap and it kinda falls on ts face when you hit the gas. I thought maybe it was a vacuum leak so on the throttle body I plugged the evap and egr vacuum lines and even the pvc. Didn't help. No emissions here. Do I need the evap or egr? Pvc I can see but do I need the others? Going to put a new fuel filter on it first see if that helps. I know the truck sat for a few years. So I'm sure it needs a tune up also.

Egr and Evap aren't just about emissions. Do some research, make up your own mind because everyone's got an opinion. My opinion, egr,reduces knock sensitivity,allows more ignition timing,reduces pumping losses and is good for a bump in mpg. Evap keeps moisture out of the tank,and keeps the fuel from evaporating,so you can burn it instead of just letting it vent. If it ran fine before you swapped tanks and pumps, I wouldn't start blaming EGR. I'd be looking at what changed when I started changing things. And no emissions testing doesn't mean it's legal to disable emissions equipment,it just means the chances of getting caught or denied registration is very low.

Could be a lot of things, from coolant sensor to base plate gasket, fuel supply on and on. There are inexpensive adapters that will allow access to diagnostic information. TBI systems are fairly simple, but basic information is needed to pin down a proper repair.

I am totally against removing emission items on any computer-controlled vehicle. Not because I am a tree hugger but when emissions items are removed, the check engine light will be on. If something important fails later on you will ignore the light.
