Well guys I no longer own a square body, and neither does my son. We had some pretty good discussions about the progress we were having about our squares and decided to try to make an offer on a truck that we thought we would never have another opportunity at owning ever again.

My father who is now passed from military connected ALS disease bought a 1972 GMC K1500 owned it until I bought it from him in high school in 1988 I drove the truck and almost felt like it was part of me then reality set in realized that I needed something cheaper to drive on my trips to community college that was a 70 mile round trip for 4-5 days a week. So we sold it back to my grandfather as he was needing a truck for maybe a dollar or something to keep from paying sales tax. My papaw was getting older and he put a lot of character into the sheet metal of that truck rolled down hill into a walnut tree bent the grill but didn’t get the radiator support, had a car wreck from getting t-boned because he misjudged the oncoming drivers speed got the rearend and drivers bedside pretty good but everyone walked away always good when that happens. So from these incidents the truck just got enough attention to get it roadworthy again, couple years pass and then my papaw passes away so the truck pretty much sat from 1997- 2003.

My father called me up one day and asked if I would like to take the truck back he said if I didn’t want it he was going to try and sell it. At the time I was working all the overtime I could and busy with trying to raise my kids didn’t have a spot in the garage also felt like I should at least offer a price that I couldn’t afford so I told him to go ahead and sell it if he could.

Well he did sell it but he sold to his first cousin so in the back of my mind I knew we could possibly be connected again. This was in 2004. Years passed my father passed my father passed away in 2019 from ALS that was connected to his service in the Army. Later that year I talked to the owner of the truck, he asked if I still had the dog dish hubcaps that went with the truck and I said yes and I then let him know I was interested in buying the truck back he said he was going to hang on to it a little longer I gave him my phone number and asked him to let me know when he was ready so I could polish the hubcaps up he chuckled and so did I and we went on our way.

Couple more years go by and my son snappchevy as he goes by on this forum was out driving by the old farm and come home one day and said that old orange truck is gone. I shrugged it off and said he probably moved it to another shed out of view from the road. Well my wife and myself were out this past December doing some Christmas shopping and were coming home and a 1972 GMC passes me on the hiway the person driving it was not the first cousin I told my wife that I was going to follow this truck and pull in behind wherever they stop as I had a full tank of gas in my Camry and I knew I would eventually be stopping at a gas station which we did out of the cab of the truck is a young man in early 20s I complimented him on his choice of vehicle he was driving and he said thanks from there I told him my father had bought that truck new and I was supposed to be next in line to get a chance at purchasing. He said it was his dream truck and had bought from another individual off the internet . I gave him my phone number and told him I would very much appreciate if he ever thought about selling it to call. I could tell that he had no intention of selling it anytime soon if ever. Had a hard time with thoughts of never having that truck back. We came home from that interaction and I proceed to tell snappchevy about the young man and I described him so my son goes thru all of his friends from school that were into old trucks and he finds him and stays in touch with him thru messenger. Six months later we have it back we had to trade our squares to get it but it’s back and we have it titled in both our names so we will both have to agree before it ever leaves us again.
This forum has been a great resource for us and I know a lot of parts will interchange from the 72. You guys have been a lot of help and I will continue to check in especially when something isn’t going right on the mechanics end of things even though I don’t own a square anymore there is always tomorrow. Snappchevy wants a K5

Need a little advice on primer after rust repair. Going to be out in the element until we get funds saved after the metalwork for the paint job. Anyone used a product that they feel like recommending? I have a spray gun but don’t have indoor place to spray. I have been looking at a roll on primer product from the Eastwood company called optiflo or also looking at a spray epoxy primer like tamco dta. I have never painted a vehicle before but not afraid of the result I can muster up, just don’t want to buy wrong product to get solid result.

I love this. My Dad had the same truck I grew up riding around in and was my first stick shift experience in the woods while he walked along side me in creeper gear when I was 14. I begged him for it when I turned 16 when he retired it to junkyard but he wouldn't let me have it. :(

That's when I had to turn to the dark side of the force and drive Dodge trucks for several years before I got my first square and never went back. GM ever since for the most part.

I'm sorry to hear that. At least you didn't really go to the dark side. Dodgers are neutral to me. The dark side starts with an F.

You better start a thread on this great truck in the "Other Vehicles" section. Glad you finally got it back!
