My 85 k10 shifts really hard when I shift from park to drive what could it be?
There is no real shift that occurs when the lever is moved from Park to Drive. Shifting only occurs from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.
Basically the transmission defaults to first gear when the truck is idle (or even with the engine running in P or N). If D,2 or 1 is then selected hydraulic pressure is applied to the forward clutch pack. When the clutches engage, the torque converter is able to supply power to first gear.
The engagement of the forward clutch pack in and of itself, should not be able to cause any violent jerk motion. The individual plates just kind of get smoothly squeezed together by hydraulic fluid.
Did this issue crop up all of a sudden or did it develop slowly over time?
Are you sure the slam noise/feeling is actually coming from the transmission?
Are your driveshaft u-joints free of excessive play?
Motor mounts and transmission mount in good shape and secure?
How about the rear differential - any excessive play in the pinion to ring gear mesh?
It might be a good idea to inspect the drive line components before assuming a transmission issue.
