I was messing around under my truck today (79k10) and clicked my transfer case (wich is not currently hooked up the the shifter) one click back toward rear bumper now I can't get it back forward!! If I get out and lock the hubs it seems to be in 4 hi but wen I unlock them it drives in 2wh how do I get it shifted back to n?! Tried to lightly pry it no luck it's and auto 3 speed I put trans in neutral nothing! Does it have to be running??(don't really like getting under the running truck .. Or can I do it in neutral non running?? Can it be driven like this ? I did drive it forward and backwards multiple times.

It shouldn't be. It may help to shift it on the fly instead of in park, though.

Disconnect the rear d-shaft or put the rear up on jackstands, trans in neutral and try turning the rear output a little while trying to move the shift linkage. More than likely just 2 gears hitting faces instead of meshing.

x2 Yes, some t cases like to be rolling forward a bit to enable a smooth shift. Put it up on one jack stand, engine off and have a buddy roll the wheel forward, which will rotate driveshaft, while you try the shift lever. (if you have posi-trac rear end trying to engage you will need to use 2 jack stands)

If all else fails, start up the engine with someone in the cab, using 2 quality jack stands. Allow engine to rotate rear wheels very slowly, while you enable the shift. But be super careful if using this approach...
