Now that I got y'all's attention..... So I'm swapping nv4500's currently in my 85. They are both early version (93 & 94). The one I just rebuilt has the higher gears and removable shift tower but otherwise identical. I happened to notice the 94 does not have a DRAIN plug! It's like it was not drilled and tapped at the factory. Very odd. The FILL plug is there, but no drain bung. Not wanting to drill and tap it at this point, so I guess I'll just pull the inspection cover when the time comes. The inside of the cover is where the magnet resides so maybe they assume if you got to change the oil you will clean the magnet as well? Who knows.

The factory only needs to fill it, not drain it... Or it's a "Lifetime Lubricated" unit, which is anything with oil or grease, if you think about it.

Audi did that back in the 80s/90s the diff was supposed to be a sealed unit not filled,refilled checked etc. Then someone figured out that's a stupid Idea because a small leak becomes a big problem so a bulletin was issued,where to drill and tap for fill and drain.

Took em a year to make that decision because the 93 has a plug-the 94 does not?

Yeah, a friend had a Cavalier with an auto trans and no dipstick. I get trying to save some cash on manufacturing, but just a couple of warranty claims seems like they would start losing money. I can understand it a little more on manual gearboxes (being less maintenance friendly) given that most manuals are never changed/checked in their entire lifespan, still a headache down the road.

Of course all that said, its entirely possible that this one just missed a step during manufacturing and was supposed to be done right. Who knows.

From what I've read on the newer ones without the drain they expect you to just pull the inspection/pto covers to drain it. That's what I did on my 99 when I tried a fluid change on it to try an help the grinding issue it has.

In 1973 GM quit putting petcock's in the radiators of the new square bodies.
It cost 25 cents extra to get the radiator with the petcock.
GM got so much crap from the mechanics that they soon started putting them in again.
