So I guess any complete heads that are in good shape will work just clean up the bowls and tops of the runners ?
Lot more than that, look inside ports were bored straight corners are sharp and needs blending, chambers need work also and there's where you can dial in compression, lot of free torque available just need time to extract it..

Ok I can handle that. My olds motors have an inherited problem on the exaust side I always fix the unwanted egr bumps my small block car I even ported the manifolds to gain some free power without running headers.
I guess I just need to find a set of heads and we'll use my head and a die grinder. Anything else I should know about BBC heads when I'm looking for a set?

Other than the usual, I take a straight edge with me to check rocker arm stud alignment, not a common issue but I've seen them off and that can jack up the geometry if they're too far off, they can be repaired but gotta take the cost into consideration when buying.

No it's something someone piece together. L-82 block and pan 4 bolt main cast crank x rods Mexico heads Edelbrock Performer intake 80 454 Quadrajet 84-85 Corvette valve covers and a huge cam that should not be in a truck. I only know because a (Corvette guy) good help him looked over the numbers when I was working on it after I bought it

If your small block is in good shape, why not just put a stock-type cam in it, like a brand new take-out Goodwrench 350 cam? They are commonly sold by crate engine vendors like Pace Performance for $50 including new GM lifters. And if they don't have one, I do.

Of course, it would help to know the compression ratio and head specs. A stock-type cam probably wouldn't like much above 9.0:1, and large volume intake runners (above 185cc) could be detrimental to low RPM torque.

So, for a few bucks and a day's labor, you would have something that should work in the truck while building a big block.

Ah, just noticed the Mexico heads. More than likely they would be good to go with a stock cam. Also, they're probably killing cylinder pressure with the big cam, which contributes to the engine's lack of torque. But, hey it's got that rumpety-rump idle. :)

Since you already have the Chevy bellhousing bolt pattern, you can easily build a 454" BB with 550 lbs of torque with under 10 to 1 compression .

But if you have a "BOPC turbo 400", you will not find any better towing gas motor, than a 507 Cad, 9.4 to 1, 236/248 on 110 centers (@106), with a FITECH EFI (or any other cheap brand) , with an HEI .

EASILY over 600 lbs of torque in the 1800's to 5000 .

A cam swap is a definite possibility I just don't want to devote the time to it with so much other stuff to do on the truck and I don't think it will ever make the torque a BBC with a RV Towing cam will. Yes that all wrong small block sounds lumpy at idle lol my neighbor jokingly calls it the race truck.good to know about cheap cams from pace performance tho I'll check them out on line thanks

I think if I was going to go that route I would just use one of my spare olds 455s but the hole idea was a 454 would be cheaper to go threw than a455 plus my bell housing is Chevy so I'd need to build a trans to I just don't know much about BBC parts when I finde a set of heads for it I'll post the casting #s here before I buy them and see if the guys here think that they will work for me
