Timing mark ???

is this groove in the balancer the timing mark, is it best to "make it white"....machinist who built motor hasn't answered back on my questions and I want to get on with the install

White or yellow is usually what I use. And a crayon works good.

You should wait until you here from who built the engine,or you should get a piston stop to verify TDC. All covers,timing marks and balancers are not the same. For install all you need to do is put a finger over#1 plug hole and turn the motor with a breaker bar until you start feeling compression,then put a drinking straw through the plug hole and continue to turn feeling for tdc with your straw. Stab the distributor with the rotor pointing at no 1 plug wire. You'll have to twist the dist back and forth a little while a buddy cranks,when it starts twist the distributor until it sounds good. Do all your real tuning after 30 minute break-in.

They also sell a piston stop to verify TDC. Similar process as above, but you cycle back and forth until the engine will not turn. The point on the balancer halfway between the stopping point in each direction should be TDC.
