Timing Changes?

I've unplugged the timing wire, set the timing to "zero" correct?

When I plug the timing wire back in, timing jumps up 12 degrees.

is this normal?

YES!!! Also engine should be warmed up setting the 0 timing. The instructions are on the vacuum label if you have one on the top of the radiator support. I think I might be forgetting one thing though.

We dont have any '90 Burbs with a 454 in the library yet but this might help?

It says she has a 350, but 454s are 4 degrees base timing.

It's set at "zero" with tan/black wire unplugged. I won't worry about what it is with it plugged back in..

This Suburban will stay alive as long as I live!!!

Disconnect your battery for 15 seconds after you set the timing to clear code 42 from the ECM memory.

Two questions:
- What's code 42, and if you don't disco the battery after making an adjustment, will there be a problem?

-Is there any harm in advancing the timing slightly off zero, so that it's running a little more advance? As long as it doesn't ping under load...on long grades, etc......or would that be bad?
