3 speed as in Auto or 3 speed manual? Either way on the transmission, if you can do all the wiring the 87 column will work but you do have some work to do. 84 and up columns do have the MFS (Multifuncion Switch) on the stalk. Where the turn signal lever has not only a more advanced Cruise Control System and Turn Signals, but it also has wipers, wiper delay and dimmer switch. So the dimmer comes off the floor, the wipers come off the dashboard.

It would be easier of course to get an 83 on down column for the wiring aspect but otherwise, it will bolt in fine. Ohhh and wait a minute, I think you're OK being a 78 but need to find out what year the intermediate shaft changed too. It might be 78 and later are the same. @RetroC10Sport maybe able to confirm that.

Or just keep the wipers and dimmer where they are and wire in the Tutsi ale and put a non cruise handle on it.or trade it off as suggested

The wiper and dimmer really aren't that exciting to swap over to the column... or you can just leave em as is.

The Pak Con harmonica plug for the turn signals is the same from 1978 on. It will plug right in.

Not sure about the ignition switch but it's on the outside of the column. You can likely use your 1978 switch on the newer column if you need to.

The dimmer is actually on the outside of the column barrel actuated with a pushrod just like the ignition switch.
The wipers are a relatively easy move as well. The 85-91 delay module will work with your 1978 wiper motor and is easier to find than the 78-83 module and switch. The tilt column-mounted delay wiper switch is cheaper and easier to find than the non-delay switch.

The newer output shaft allows you to easily update the rag joint setup to a u-joint intermediate shaft from a Jeep XJ IIRC.
