so where does this conversation stand? Im long term planning on a new transmission. I currently have a 1990 TBI 350 sitting in my truck now with a 700r4 and NP208. That trans ever goes id like to stick with automatic and OD. is the 4L80-E gonna be the best/easiest swap in or what about the 4L60-Es? I know the 60 vs 80 is strength rating but Im not pulling a camper. Once in a blue moon ill test the weight rating for fun. Is there any fuel effeciency differences between the two? I don't know much about the 90s trannys....would my ecm control it with the proper chips?
Project is currently stalled. I can't get the truck in my shop (IF I remove the mirrors I have 2" to spare) and it is too damn cold and wet out there to play in this muck. Also, I took a big pay cut when I took this job so the funds aren't there right now. Fortunately, momma's about to start working again for the first time in about 12 years so money may come into play again by fall.
I'm running 4.11's with stock sized tires and don't see the point in putting anything bigger on there. If it were 4x4 I could see doing a small lift and some larger tires but that looks doesn't work for me on 2wd.
Right now, I'm hoping to be able to pull the motor this fall (since I don't drive it much in the winter) and rebuild it. I may go ahead and just rebuild the TH400 at the same time. I like the idea of trying to get ahold of a TBI setup so I can do away with the cold start issues but I have basically given up on my grand plan of trying to make this a fuel mizer.
If I can find a deal on a 350, I may look into getting that and doing a rebuild on it and swap it out instead of rebuilding the 454. If I do that, I'll see what I can find for a 4l80e.
I really like the idea of the 454 but feeding the pig is troublesome. If I decide to change the engine, everything is up in the air and fair game. Since I can't buy parts now, it's just a waiting game.
I don't post here as much as I probably should but the truth of the matter is I am but a lowly learner at this point without a lot to contribute. I do, however, go through every new post every day. I have learned a lot in the time I have been here but that has also led to my confusion of where I want to go.
If I were to take the time to write down the things I would like to do to this truck today and compare it with what I posted when I first got here it would probably be good for a laugh, but it is all part of the process.
You asked what time it was and I built you a freaking watch. Any other questions?
