Well finally got the truck running with my 383 stroker I built and the 700R4 trans died on me. Lost 3rd and 4th gear. Trans shop quoted over $2,600 to rebuild which I thought is stupid. So I want to replace it with a TH400, does anybody in Oklahoma have one they want to part with?

I don't know how stupid the price is but everything automobile has gone up much more than the advertised national inflation rate. Just got back a TH350 that needed to be resealed, $1500.

I know for the price they quoted me, I can get on speedway and order a new rebuilt transmission thats better then stock, just have to get a torque converter. I just dont have the $2500 for either lol. Dropped all on building that 383. But I agree, shop rates are stupid high.

I think these days your chances of finding a good used 4l80e is better than finding a good used 400. You will have to pirate or buy, build a shift controller. Do something to regulate line pressure like transgo 48 mod. Or modify to run on full line pressure. Then with 48 mod or full line pressure wire for manual valve body control. Bonus is you'll have a 400 with overdrive.

Do you know 48 mod. It adds a vacuum modulator to control line pressure. Then you can shift it how ever you like. Switches, modified valve body wiring, for manual control. Manual valve body,or cheap ebay controller (about 30 bucks)

I do not.
But I will as this sounds interesting.
I was thinking of sending it to Nick for a full rebuild on mine.
Max's fresh one may not need anything done to it to be able to run it as is.

$2600 seems in the right neighborhood for a 700R4 behind a 383, and I've hand customers spend a lot more than that to get them to the point they're survivable at 383/Big Block power and torque levels...Whether you thought it was a stupid idea to dump $2600 into a 700R4 is another matter but the shop's price sounds reasonable to me.

Go to any wrecking yard and yank one out then go through it. TH400s are relatively straightforward to work on, have very few weaknesses, all of which can be addressed on overhaul and will last a very long time if you put it together correctly.
