Im putting a tbi motor in a 84 k10. Ive got questions about gas tanks. Ive read in a few places about getting 87 model tanks.

Did the 87 models come with 16 gallon tanks, 20 gallon tanks or both
Did the 16 gallon tanks have a baffle for the pump? Or were they just like the carb model tanks?
If yes does anyone have a picture of the inside of the tank?
If no 16 gallon tank, do the 20 gallon tanks swap right in place of 16 gallon tanks (Same brackets/location)?

Thanks.

20 gal tanks only a fit a long bed. All 87 model replacement tanks have the baffle for efi. The brackets are in different locations as a 20 gal tank is longer than a 16.

So the 87 model did come in a short bed with 16 gallon tank that had a baffle for the fuel pump correct?

Im just trying to verify because I bought two new 16 gallon tanks from a vendor, that showed to be for a 87 model but they have no baffles in them. They are i identical to the two carb tanks I already have just shiny. I attempted to contact the vendor about it and they want me to pay the return shipping and wont refund the shipping to get them here. I didnt even ask for a refund on the shipping, just to not pay the return shipping.

Yeah, gotta have the baffles. If they’re not there, those aren’t FI tanks.

I’ve heard bad things about their customer support. Luckily my only dealings were over a core return. Is all this correspondence happening over email?

It is. I didnt realize there was no other way to deal with them. They wanted a vin and picture of my old part but i tried to explain that wouldnt help cause its a 84 with carb tanks. They basically replied with that was the reason the part wouldnt work, they aren’t responsible for the shipping cost and closed the ticket. After the return ill be out $40+ shipping.

I tried in several ways to explain that regardless of what im putting it in, they arent the right tanks for an 87 (thats the year i searched parts for) and theres nothing in the description that says they are not fot fuel injected trucks.

What part number tank did you order? For a 16 gal baffled one it should be GM11C.

I ordered my 87 tank from them an got a baffled one no problem.

GM11B

When I looked up an 1987 model its the first option that came up. Nothing in the info said it wasn't for fuel injected trucks.

I questioned them about no details stating not for fuel injected models. This is the reply I got:

“If you're not seeing the details you are looking for, we do not have them. That also means they are not important for fitment. The manufacturer always lists the details that will be important to determine if the part will fit your vehicle”

They are going off the technicality of it fitting the vehicle. It does. But wont work properly.

The customer service has sucked for sure. Ive bought several things in the past from them. This is the first time ive had to deal with customer service. I doubt ill spend anymore money with them.

On a positive note I found a local buyer for the tanks. Im only out $8 and I've ordered some other tanks that are advertised to have the baffles. I guess somewhere in all this I've learned a lesson maybe?

It's basically a bowl around the fuel pump pickup.

yeah mine didnt have that just something in the bottom to move fuel from the ends to center. I think we are to used to modern efi and have to remember this was done as a last model year and they didnt know what know what we know now. The fuel tank for my vette is the same for 78-82 while 82 is efi. If we cant find a picture showing otherwise I bet they did the same thing for the trucks.

Can the 87 (baffled) tanks be used with a carb? I want to swap out my tanks for new and still have dreams of an FI system down the road - was just wondering if I installed the later tanks if they'd be ok with the earlier senders til I do.

Just checking in I have just installed a 1987 350 engine transmission and transfer case in my 1984 short bed pickup truck. I understand I need a new tank with electric fuel pump, I have the wiring harness with the motor, will the electrical circuit be in there to run to the fuel pump, or would that need to be added to the trucks harness? I did not get the ecu with the engine should I buy a new one or can I get one out of the junk yard? I know the motor came out of a 2005 Suburban. Thanks for your help

Yes, carburetor setups will work with baffled tanks for fuel injection, but not the opposite way around.
