So now I can decide whether to cut and weld this one and add an insert to cover up the debacle, or just buy a new gate and junk this one. Haha....
Probably the latter.

But thanks for everyone's help. You guys are alright.

If the gate is just rusted at those holes, I'd clean up the rust a bit with some sand paper. Spray paint with some rust inhibitor and find a good band and cover it back up. Noone will see the holes on the back of the truck. The interior of the tailgate doesn't matter much either so you could just spray the interior of the tailgate with some of this in the rattle can. https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-2...ocphy=9026281&hvtargid=pla-309352414547&psc=1

Good thought. The rust around the holes is pretty bad, though.
And I'm not sure the rest of the gate is still in good enough shape to justify it.

Someone is repoing those bands but I didn't pay a lot of attention since mine is in decent shape. As I recall, the price was pretty decent.

LMC is making it. #38-9602 $320.

Ouch.
I've seen a couple of decent used examples in the $100 to $150 range on CL and FB. I guess I'll just wait and keep looking for a good whole tailgate with insert. Lord knows I've got plenty of work to do in the mean time. Heh.

Yep, just found a really nice insert for $60 about an hour from me.
Actually seems like there are a lot of them. Not so many nice tailgates close to me, though.
Damn rust.

You can see where someone tried to put filler of some kind on the back of the gate where the rust holes were bigger.

I couldn't find a good picture on the web, but here's a picture of my '87 GMC in 1989. The Chevy lettering would be on the right vs. the left on a GMC. All '87 Chevy's should have a Fuel Injection emblem on the left of the tail gate above the band. On my GMC it's the rectangular line on the on the right.

Still can't find a damn decent 81 to 87 tailgate with a band.....unless I want to drive 6hrs.

Are LMC aftermarket ones any good?

Sounds like a 6 hour drive is cheaper.
