so, my dad went and got a 1984 f-350 with the 6.9, and when you are going down the road there is this strange god awful growl that starts up and when it starts you wanna get out of the truck, it don't matter if you're doing 15mph, or 60mph it is very loud an violent. you can feel a vibration when it starts. we are thinking that it's in the transfer case cause when we put it in 4wd without engaging the hubs it will stop but then start again and it wont be as bad as it is in 2wd. before we go and brake the bank is there any opinions on what we should do?

p.s. we are not very tech savy, so any big words will not fully connect with us haha.

DUH! Sell the Ford and buy a GMC. Or - if you're not too picky - a Chevy will do.

Okay - comedy show's over.

This is a very basic diagnostic, but maybe your rear end is shot - or one of the universals is about to come apart.

Have you done at least a basic visual inspection?

Remove the rear drive shaft. Lock the front hubs, put the T/C in 4H and take it out for a test run.

If the sound is gone, you have at least isolated the problem to the rear drive train.

Without hearing the noise I would suspect pinion bearings. Can you grab the drive shaft and get any movement or play out of it? It could also be a wheel bearing. If you can jack up the axle and turn ice wheels by hand you may be able to feel or hear a rough bearing

You may also pull the diff cover and see what it looks like in there

we had a guy look at what he thought it was and he drained some oil out of the transfer case and there were some metal shavings in it, so now we are looking for a new one to get. thanks for all the feed back.
