Stock rim width

Howdy folks! I'm finally on my way to go pick up Ol' Blue. I had a plan a back in May of going up, but COVID put a kabash on that, but I'm finally getting up there to get her road ready again.

With that being said, I'm going to be changing out the tires (the existing are showing signs of cracking), and I was thinking about going with a 265/75 R16. Just about the same ride height, but a bid wider.

Will this fit on a stock 1983 K20 rim? I couldn't figure out if I had 6" or 6.5" wide rims, and was hoping one of y'all would be able to set me straight.

Oh, and I'm not sure how to update a signature to show my truck. She's a 1983 K20 Silverado.

The stock 16's were normally 6.5" wide. Yes, a 265 will fit fine and wear properly too.

As I drove from Houston to Kansas last night, I got to thinking. Could I put a tire on a stock '83 K20 that was a bit wider AND a bit taller? I was thinking I'd go with the 265, but is there another option that would fill up the wheel well a bit more, without rubbing?

Most K20s can handle up about a 33” tire without a lift.

It’s not a real common size but 255/85R16 tires are 33.1” tall and will fit on a 6 1/2” rim. Goodrich Mud Terrain and Dick Cepek Extreme Country have that size with really good looking off-road tread.

I've run a couple sets of the Cepek tires and I'm really happy with them. Both sets were a 285/75/16 and run on a stock 6.5" wheel. The current set has around 45k on them with around 25-30% tread remaining.

6.5" seems so "lacking" in this day and age? I must be watching too much Bitchin Rides and Iron Resurrection.

I was under a time crunch yesterday (I'm over 9 hours from home), and made a decision that I hope won't come back to bite me in the a$$. I went with a local tire dealer that had a set of 285/75 R16s in stock. They were of the MasterCraft Courser AXT2 flavor. I think they are a subsidiary of Cooper? I looked for the other flavors y'all recommended, but it would have been 3-5 day delivery, and I didn't have that kind of time. :/

Still, I think they look fantastic on the truck. I'm rebuilding the carb this morning, so I will hopefully be able to give y'all a review on the ride quality.

Still haven't given her a bath, as I've just been working through the mechanical issues (growing list).

I've run 285's on stock GM 6.5" wheels. I had them on an '01 2500HD crew cab. I always had the front aired up to 65 PSI and the rear at 45 when unloaded. I made sure to air them back up for loads or towing trailers to stiffen the sidewalls as I noticed more trailer sway aired down.

Bfg mud terrains are a great tire, i have them on my 2wd s10 lol

On my square body trucks I like the 255/85-16's and they fit stock wheels and the truck with zero problems.
I run 285/75-16's on my newer pickups.
265/75-16's on my 1994 Suburban were a factory option.

I originally had 265/70/15's on my truck but I have 8" wide rims to have the sidewall closer to straight instead of going inward like it would have been if I was running a stock rim at 6.5". Everything was fine until the first rain and I was hydroplaning all over the place. So I moved down to a 235/70/15 to narrow the frontal and that was a lot better.

Ya'll's big tires don't hydroplane?

I've got 315/75R16 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A's and live in Oregon... We get a good amount of rain and snow. Never had any kind of hydroplaning or lack of traction, and that's a 12.5" wide tire.
