Hi, I was wanting to go with Custom Autosound for my stereo for my 1981 Silverado but from what I see all they have speaker wise is universal fit types which I’m not impressed with. I’d like to go with a different stereo brand then but I’m not drilling any holes on my truck to fit it. Any companies make a good kit that I won’t have hack on my truck to fit it? It needs to be mp3 capable and maybe 300watts about.

I went with Classic car stereo. It's 300 W. It looks period correct and sounds good. But I don't drown out the ole 496 which sounds better!!

Hearing a properly tuned Big Block growl is a special kind of music all by itself, especially when those secondaries kick in!!!:rocking:

hey steve! i added an aux jack to my stock delco...run the music from my iphone 6....(last one with a headphpone jack) which is great cause i also use it to talk on the phone and it comes through the stereo!

THEN.....i added an amp, sub and two 6x9's ......i can throw a toggle that turns on the amp....and jammin i go!

took a few tries to get it right...but was worth the effort

i will try to post some pictures later this week

yeh the biggest part is not cutting the dash. You can always add more power and better speakers. If you put a center console in you could use any radio you want.

I went ahead and cut mine cuz the truck had already been hacked here and there and not all original.

This interests me. I would like to see how this was done also. I have no stereo in my truck or speakers so I would like info on this option for when the time comes . was looking at retro autosound but a lot of their reviews have me concerned on sound quality cause most said it was not great .

OK....so I started this with an analog delco with an aux, 10" subwoofer, and 6x9's in the carpet covered wooden box. it sounded like crap. I was told the analog stereo was sending a "dirty" signal to the amp, from my music on the phone, the 6x9"s were jammed up against the seat which cut all the high frequency and muffled them, and the 10" sub was just TOO much for the small cab.

The 6x9's are now in the corners and sound great....could not fit my pioneers with the big magnets, but theses $99 Kickers work just fine. The sheetmetal speaker holders rattled a bit, so i removed them and set them in polyurethane caulk to hold them in the cab. not pretty, but effective.

The delco runs my door speakers (without the amp) on the front channel for news, talk radio and talking on the phone....80-90% of the day The red toggle is the trigger for the amp that runs the 6x9's and the sub off the rear channel of the delco......been like that for about 2 years....wouldn't change a thing.

PS.....I tried one of those retrosound units in another vehicle.....its back in the box on the shelf

I have a Retro Sound Hermosa in my K30 with Kicker 44KSC3504 3.5” 2-Way (50 W / 100w peak) in the dash. I have Boston Acoustics 6x9's in the rear cab corners. It's going to need some more bass. I'll probably add a powered 8" subwoofer under the seat after the truck gets painted. In my other non-power windowed truck I always had a second set of 6x9's in the door to make up the bass.

Here’s what I did to my ‘76 Vette so I could keep the stock AM/FM stereo Delco. Be sure and read the description - I describe how it works there. I posted the vid 8 years ago, but I still use it and it works great. I also still have the iPod in the vid, but most of the time I’ll use my modern iPhone with a 1/8” headphone jack adapter.

powered subs work great! have one in my elcamino in the smuggler compartment....doesn't take much with the small cab space...you can probably fit that upright behind the seat in the pickup......taking out that seat really sucks

I have JBL 3 1/2 in the dash and Infinity 6x9s in the rear with Polk Audio amplifier and Pioneer stereo to drive the audio. Its loud AF. The CB radio is tight homie.
