I took a couple pictures when taking the bed apart to get sandblasted. I believe this to be a original CA truck and never disassembled. The fenders were literally glued to the bed sided and took a substantial amount of time to cut the seam sealer to get them off. The steps had a 1/4 bead going to the body. I do not believe the fenders had excess seam sealer sticking out.

If I was to try to be original, I was going to cut a piece of metal, cut at 90 degrees with a small 1/4 circle for the bead sticking up, then just scrape the excess seam sealer to get the factory look. (edit: or after thinking about it for too long, just cut the tip of the tube in the shape I want. ...lol!) You can see a little of that in the first picture.

Personally, I am using the black welting so I can take it back apart.

I have seen on other cars where seam sealer was used in the rockers, epoxy primer-sealer on all parts, then assembled, seam sealer and then painted.

That looks and sounds like the same sealer that was used on fleetside bed floors and wheel tubs. And K5's too, actually.

Taking my 87 short step 4X4 apart now and getting ready for paint, seam sealer was black (painted) on the surface, white underneath. Mine has never been apart or repainted and zero rust :driver:
Just thought I’d jump in and share.
Thanks
