steering column question

hey guys,
i have a 1983 gmc 2500 with a manual trans
recently my truck was stolen, luckly i got the truck back but there are a few things that were damaged. the main problem is the steering column is broken.
a buddy of mine said he has a coulum for a automatic that i can have.
can i make this steering column work in my truck or can i use the peices to repair my steering column? any input would be appreciated

here is a picture of whaat is broke on the steering column. basically when i turn the steering wheel binds up. and i can grab the wheel and move it around

It's hard to tell from the image provided - did you take the photo while laying on the floor looking up?

Anyway, it looks like they broke the upper column bearing housing (maybe also known as the bowl). It's just cast metal and brittle.

As far as I know, the shifter (manual or auto) is behind the bowl and sshould not be an issue. The bowl assembly should be interchangable.

Release the switch plate and the yellow spring - undo the required bolts and the bowl should be out in your hand pretty quick.

yea sorry for the picture i know its a little confusing, but yea its the bearing housing that is all busted up. along with the ignition and turn signal mech
