Yeah i guess i did leave myself open for that one. The conversation was a little more professional than how I explained it lol. It was at closing time so im sure he was just being short with me. My brother in law says all bets it's a high torque mini gear reduction starter. It's something he just started selling and it's the same exact starter jegs sells in their name brand. I'm not familiar with jegs' products but he says it's a pretty good starter.

I'd get it man. The smaller the better... it'll fire that bad boy right up. Just don't drink the water lol. Seriously I got my mini from summit. It's there house brand. 3 years of daily starts min 5 times a day, still going strong.

Oh b4 you buy the starter try just changing your positive batt cable. Even though it looks good it can be bad.

Change the negative one too. People often change the positive one and don't do the negative one. Either can give you trouble, and the negative one is really easy to change.

And the heat shield is a good idea even on a mini. The starter will be further from the header, but it is the infrared radiated heat that is the issue.

I see noone has mentioned it yet, and I have a feeling what this local starter guy is going to show you is, an OEM starter off of a 96 or later 350 SBC. Or was it 95 when GM went OEM hi torque? I intend to just get a clean newer looking starter from Pull A Part out a later GMT400 truck that will be the smaller OEM hi torque gear reducted starter.

Most 350's fire right up with just a click of the key to the START position. I don't think they even need to make one full revolution. That has always been my experience anyway.

Mine is just a tap of the key. Only in the morning it may need to be cranked over longer to start.

here's my experience with starters. my bb would eat a starter about every 6 months to a year. it was funny(not really) the starter would be fine no noise, start fine then one day I would go to start it and bam. most of the time it would grind like it needed shimming, three times busted the nose cone. once it started with the noise I would have to replace the starter shims never helped, once the starter was replaced everything would be fine for 6 months to a year and then out of the blue, bam. I didn't want one of those aftermarket mini starters because I have some buddies that used them and had bad luck, and the price jeeeze. so one day about 3 years ago was talking to an oldtimer racer type. he said this is what you need to do. ask for a 1969 chevelle ss 396 4 speed starter. well low and behold, cast iron nose cone shorter bolts and it's been trouble free for 3 years. cost the same as the stock replacement starter. one other thing I do run the stock little bracket on the front of the starter. highdesertranger

I would choose this starter over one of those failure prone mini starters ANYDAY. And I think it was '95 as the starting year.

I was thinking it was too, but I know for a fact, by 96 and Vortec motors, it was for sure. But I do believe it was actually 95 and it came the same year of the new round dash.

It was 1995 but it depends on the truck too, my friend works at a wreckers and their interchange states that some trucks got big some small, and It really doesn't make sense, things like a regular cab shortbed got big, extended cab short got small, extended cab long got a big, etc.

But it really doesn't matter, just make sure you get the bolts with it, they are shorter.

I wasn't aware of that. So it's a crap shoot. I know now my 95 and 96 had the hi torque. You can tell the obvious difference in sound.

I have used these starters on my v8 vega conversions with good luck even the cheap ones in this link I have had no trouble with them.
but you need to get the right bolts with them.
