Starter questions

Once you find a starter nose that works on your block it pays to keep that as long as you can. We have a kid(anyone younger than 55 is a kid to me) in town that learned starter and alternator rebuilding from his granddad and he is good. I take my starter to him and he rebushes the nose so I get it back.. Also the cast noses seem to fit better than the aluminum ones with the RIGHT bolts!!

That's great that you're getting what you want.

Another work on starters tho, as Idahovette said, the bendix (nose) can be reshimmed. The starter motor rarely goes bad if the heat shields are kept.

The solenoid main power bolt can be turned 180 degrees one time if the solenoid ever fails you. Take one apart some time and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah, I don't know how many I've seen where the solenoid was cooked cause they did NOT have a heat shield in place. Good call on turning the power bolt 180 !!

A wise mechanic (long long ago) showed me that trick when mine went kaflooey.

One of the best examples of the 'KISS' method ever.

I also clean up the round disc that the power bolt rides on, along with the other connections in the cap. Then a SMALL bead of sealer around the cap and the solenoid case, to help seal it if the gasket looks questionable.

The starter brace came yesterday, pretty pleased original GM, came in sealed “genuine GM” bag and from a Chevy dealership. (Wasn’t sure based on Amazon listing). Fits up nice and can even use original heat shield with just a minor mod of bending or removing a tab.

I've never seen a starter mounting like the 2nd one. That looks like what I need for mine
