So Does Everyone HATE This Steering Wheel?

I am new to Square Bodies, so I have of course been browsing the Googly internet machine and this site's "Random Media" section looking at all the pictures of everyone's Squares.

One thing I have been seeing a lot of is people ditching the factory steering wheel like pic related:

Seems like the hip thing to do is replace them with the smaller steering wheels like the ones that came in the late 80's/early 90's Suburbans. When I bought my K5 it had one of these steering wheels from a later model Suburban in it. I rented a steering wheel puller from Auto Zone and put the original steering wheel like pic related back on. I just didn't think the Suburban steering wheel matched the rest of the interior so I went back to the original.

So, do people just not like these steering wheels? Why are they hated so?

It seems that no matter what is on a truck people will change it anyway,just to be changing it.I have that wheel on mine,maybe mine is skinnier.Its just to big in circumference.And the grip is way to small.I haven't ever took time to change it as,partly I'm too cheap and secondly I've never seen a wheel I like enough to hassle with changing it out.

The material the grip surface is made of degrades apparently in certain situations - becoming sticky so people buy new ones.
I like the OE wheel fine and reproductions are available.

You can de-sticky them but ...

I too ditch that 4 prong wheel for the two, my Blazer had one also.
I think kids and @Old77 like em cuz theyre newer and not sticky...they think it's an "upgrade".

I don't necessarily hate the factory steering wheel, but in my case, the original is a POS for sure. Missing the center button, torn up around the edges with chunks missing, etc. Add to that the fact that I don't love the looks of them, and they do seem a bit big (maybe fine if you don't have power steering).

I like the looks for Grant steering wheels, and I had one on my '92 back in High School, so that's what I plan to replace my factory wheel with. Not sure on the exact one yet, but it's what I'll go with when that time comes. I've got to get Daisy ('82) on the road first. Once it's actually dependable, then I'll worry about the steering wheel.

That steering wheel and the old Vega steering wheel is recognized everywhere.

Sure you can. I've had success with acetone, rag, and a 5 gallon bucket of elbow grease...all you gotta do is get the sticky off

You can de-sticky them but ...

but most people won't spend the energy.
I argue the "hip thing to do" is to refurb the OE unit.

Dang! Your truck looks good too but what diameter is your wheel? It's a 14 or 15?
