Your transmissions TV cable is probably not hooked up correctly causing the shifting problems. You need the correct cable bracket and TV bracket for the throttle lever on the carburetor. I would recommend doing some mods to the transmission cuz it will not last long behind even a mild 400 if your hard on it. While the motor is out I would install a shift kit and if the kit you get dose not include a new stiffer regulator spring and boost valves for the oil pump and a corvette servo I would add these to the mods. I just installed a modified 350 in my Camaro with a stock 700R4 and it slips the transmission at high RPM 5,000RPM+ Not a great transmission stock un less it is behind a stock motor.
