Sm465 locked up in granny gear

I parked my truck at my local Wal-Mart. Before I shut it off I put it in low first like I always do. When I returned and tried to leave I could not get out of first gear. I was running out of time so I left it at a friend's house. I have had many 465's but never had one stick in first. Going to pull the shifter out tomorrow. Any ideas??

No ideas sorry but you are going about it right starting with the shifter. Hopefully you will find the issue in this.

I've had to pull the shifter and use a screwdrive to line the slots up, then re-install the shifter before. I was young, poor, and dumb back then, so I never figured out what was causing it, but I must have had to do it three or four times in 2 years

The roll pins holding the shifter in the top cover may be slopped out and out of place causing a bind. The actual coupling assembly of it that drops into the cover may be slopped out as well, the handle itself may need some tlc also.

I was told never leave your manual trans in gear when you park it. Someone might bump into you and cause it a problem.

That would mandate an emergency brake or carrying blocks to keep it from rolling away. Some of us don't have an efficient e-brake that works or that is trustworthy although we should repair it!

I agree the parking brake can be untrust worthy. Right or wrong, I have always put my manual transmissions in reverse when parking.

Some cars back in the 80's, you had to have it in reverse just to get the key out of the ignition.

I never paid attention to this. Always used both.

Just throwing it out there.

Update: I pulled the shifter out and slid the the right linkage forward and inserted the shifter and everything worked fine. I could not find any wear on the roll pins or shifter or detents. A fluke maybe??

Like I said, I had one that did that every so often. I never got to the bottom of why. I'm sure there was something wrong, but I never knew lol.

Is the end of your shifter worn down? I've seen it where the driver constantly held his hand on the shifter while driving, it creates extra wear on the shifter end that contacts the shift forks and the shift forks themselves. Novak makes a solid shifter which is really nice. You feel more vibration but tighter, positive shifts wir bu out the rubber piece

I've seen it where the driver constantly held his hand on the shifter while driving, it creates extra wear on the shifter end that contacts the shift forks and the shift forks themselves. Novak makes a solid shifter which is really nice. You feel more vibration but tighter, positive shifts wir bu out the rubber piece

The dog on the end of the shifter looks like new, showing no wear. Everything feels right and has always shifted fine.
