Brake fluid, most likely caused the failure from the looks of it. Separated inside and outside of the bushing.... I'd bet on it.

Well guys, I finally got some time off from work to try this mod, but found that this will not work on a 1978 either, not just pre 1977. I am now in search of a steering column to allow me to use this mod. I will check back in when I have something more.

So you're saying that the 78 column is also a spline shaft and not a D shaft? Can you take a pic of your column to intermediate shaft joint so we know what it looks like and be able to tell by looking what units it will and will not fit.?

can do. It is a spline shaft. The sad part hot rod is I have three 1978s sitting there and two of them are spline shafts. The third one I looked at today and it is D shaft, but it is in crappy shape and the wirring is jacked and it is not a tilt column, whic I really want for my daughter. I found a later model one with tilt for $125 on Craiglist. It is a 1985 model I think. I am hoping to pick it up and hope that I can make the wiring harness work with it. Any thoughts? I have a complete front clip from a 1987 I would trade for a setup that would work for me if anyone has an extra...Heck I got lots of leftover parts to trade for something I can use.

Thanks for your time, HR:)

The 1985 will have a multifunction turn signal stalk. My 1981 had a 1984-91 column in it, just the high beam switch and wiper switch weren't used. As I recall, the turn signal wiring was a plug in.

I wonder if some 1978s got a splined shaft until they ran out and went to the D shaft...

I picked up 5 Jip Shafts last week. Already shipped one off, and getting another ready tonight. I knew there were 2 types of these shafts but so far I had only seen 1 type until this batch. I got the 4 separated OK as I have others in the past, but this one other type that I was hoping to use for myself, seems to be a real bitch to get apart. I've worked on it for over half an hour and it's still not budging. I thought it might have looked a bit more heavier duty, not that it needed to be, but just so you guys know.... If you get to a DIY wrecking yard and you have your choice of the 2 types, I'd go with the more common type. I also noticed the 2nd type doesn't have the stop up top at the dampner like the common style has.

Common Style. Took about 20 minutes to separate all 3 of these.

2nd, More Uncommon Style. I can seem to get this bitch separated.
