Rebuilt Stock Steering Column or Aftermarket?

Gents,

If you could get a perfectly rebuilt GM steering column that had been completely disassembled, stripped to bare metal and professionally rebuilt using high quality parts, new wiring, new bearings, new turn signal cam, I mean ALL of it new or restored, fresh paint stem to stern and it looked and functioned as it did brand new. Let's try to keep this simple by assuming it’s a tilt column with no cruise control. Let's say the sale price was $1000.

The question I have is this:

Would you rather have this rebuilt unit, or would you rather go with an new aftermarket unit that, for arguments sake, was about the same price?

$1000 is awful expensive for a stock unit. Provided all the hard parts are good, switches, bearings and tumbler will be around $100. I just rebuilt 2.

Guess it depends on what the goal is, custom or stock.

Rebuilt for the thought that more parts would be OE. Not real high on aftermarket lately but some are better than others and even a fair amount of the AC Delco stuff is from China...

I’d opt for the factory rebuilt if it was done complete as you say.
Ididit is USA made and nice as well, but a tad over the budget.

I would go for the original rebuild one. I ordered a tilt column (Ididit) for my C20 when there was a -150$ on orders over 1000$ at summit. Original column is shot and non tilt. It's great quality and sitting on the shelf waiting for installation. But I still would use the original rebuild column because original.

Squarebody Synidicate has those shortened Ididit steering columns if you need more room, a bit pricey though

Steering columns galore are a good replacement. I bought a Chinese replacement column and it was junk

I vote rebuild the OE column. Regarding China parts I have two stories about my frame off resto of 76 GMC 4x4 short bed. We ordered new brake proportional valve and installed it. First one leaked second one locked up rear brakes after 200 miles. Both came from China because well.. no other choice . Put the stock 45 year-old OE proportional valve back in and it still works perfectly.

Also, decided to replace the stock front hubs so ordered new set of Warn’s from summit and both were notchy and hung up when locking and unlocking. The box said “made in China”. Went down to local auto parts store and (by luck) got a pair of NOS Warn Hubs made in USA and they’re smooth as butter. China parts look the same but not the same. Mic drop.
