So I bought an 86 K10. When I went out to look at it it started right up and drove around. I trailered it home unloaded it drove it around the block no issues. Go out today. Just crank sputtered once then nothing after that. I pop the hood and see there zero wiring going to the electric choke and this little nipple cover is completely dry rotted. I’m wondering if the choke not working it causing it to not start? Any thoughts?

Is it getting gas? That fuel filter looks like it may be the culprit. Hook up the choke to a fused 12 volts when ignition on and get a new rubber plug. Don't forget to ground one side of the choke.

Id change the filter and rubber lines, the look pretty shatty! I bet it took in a piece of rubber and crappy fuel.

It doesn't have to have the choke hooked up to start and run. It makes cold starts easier and cold drivabilty better. I've got chevy small blocks with no choke for 25 years that still start right up,sometimes you gotta pump the pedal a couple of times. Make sure the choke plate itself is open and make sure you have accelerator pump shot. Dump a tablespoon of gas down the carbureator throat then try to start it. Post your results. That vacuum cap isn't a big enough leak to cause a no start. Clip an inch off the other vacuum hose then reconnect. Take the inch piece and slip it where the cap is and stick a screw,a bb,or a golf tee in it,problem solved.

If it's a 1406 I think your vac advance hose is hooked up to the wrong side. The side with the vac cap is the metered side and is where the vac advance hose should be connected. The side its connected to is just straight vac from the manifold. I would hook up the choke as it doesn't hurt anything and should make cold starts easier. You NEED to change your filter and check your tank for water. You may have a piece of that rotted rubber cap in your carburetor some place now too.

Manifold vacuum is the preferred advance source, ported is an emissions function.

So here’s what I ended up doing. Changed the filter and lines, changed the cap and rotor, still didn’t fix it, needed up changing the module inside the the distributor and it fired right up, some how also located a bent rotor cap tab. But when testing the coil right to the battery with the key out of the ignition the truck attempted to turn over…. I’m guessing there’s some wiring gremlins living in the truck!
