Cool, never seen one before.
Probably because I don't see many vans.

Quick story - most of the vans we built back then were very utilitarian. Stripped down (white) cargo vans for phone companies, utilities and conversion upfitters.

We did a study one time and determined that the majority of the loaded up fancy vans were ordered by Engineering for the engineers to drive around. Very few went to the general public.

There was probably one specific engineer responsible for that: Bob Z.

He loved those vans (for some reason) and always drove one when he could get one.

He was a funny guy (off beat sense of humor). We were standing outside at the Milford Proving Ground one day and could see a bunch of buzzards circling in the distance.

Bob sighed and said "...there must be a G Van going up the 16% grade".

In 1977 Ford offered an Econoline that was called the "Cruising Van". It was a short wheelbase van with special striped paint, round porthole windows in the back, swivel captains chairs and a few other special features. At the time, Ford was trying to meet CAFE gas mileage standards and gas was relatively expensive, so most E100 and E150 vans came with the 300 Cubic Inch 6 cylinder engine.

I don't remember if GM had something similar.

my ole man bought a GMC Rally Wagon in 1972. You can barely see it in this foto taken in 1978 after we moved to California. Drove from NY to CA. Paid $3600 out the door brand new.
