I gotta pump the **** outta mine to start but, I don't dd it and start it about once a week and let it warm up. Not so much when i warm start it.

So I was reading through the factory service manual and it said something about making sure that I am using the proper Starting procedure. I don't have the owners manual though so does anyone know what it is? I'm just curious because I've always just done one pump to the pedal and then crank. What does GM consider "proper"

Depends on the year, engine, and carb or fulie, but you are essentially right. 3/4 push is what is reccommended for my 400sbc. It works.

Myself, I had no idea the GM starting procedures were so specific. I've just always mashed my pedal a couple times before a cold start, and if it still didn't catch, mash it again. Haha.
I admit I've been guilty of letting my truck high idle for more than 5 minutes during the winter. Now I feel bad about that.

Nothing to feel bad about there. I do it only because during the winter, I want heat before I get on the road not 5 minutes before I get to work.

Couple pumps after a week of sitting. Always drop the high Idle down after I know it isn't going to die. Carbs will be carbs.

I wouldn't . That things pretty cool. Just imagine that in the McDonald's parking lot though.

One pump in the morning, tap the key. It really all depends on whether the engine is tuned up well, and the carb is adjusted properly, no vacuum leaks, etc.

I didn't know about the extra pedal when hot, will try that next time, as it does give me a fits sometimes.

Shoot, most people don't even understand the correct starting procedure for a fuel injected vehicle (yes, there is one), let alone a carb'd one!
