Primer wont dry

anyone ever had a issue with primer not drying ..never seen this in my life ..primer always drys

well first off what kind? is it spray can or out of a gun? epoxy, self etch, filler primer, 2k? lots of options and brands. My first thought is not enough hardner/activator, but not knowing what type that may not be the answer.

Also the weather, is it really humid? rain? hot? cold?

what temp activator if you are using some?

well upon my research I messed up ..its a basic alkyd primer ..no activator need ..just reduction if you want ..but so I find it'll not like my single stage urethane topcoat either ..so a major set back ..any thoughts ,,still will have to wait for it to dry before I can remove it either way

all the guys at the local body shop supply here say that if it's not a 2 part setup it will never dry.

might be time to bust out some rags and thinner or something and just wipe it all off.

That kind of primer sounds like those paints at lowes home depot tractor supply etc. Those can take weeks or more to dry. Yes those types also do not play well with others as far as top coating.

Even though it's expensive sometimes, you kinda want to stay with the same brand for all your stuff, like say you go with ppg well you really want their brand primer, base coat, clear coat etc so you know they will work together. If not then be sure to ask or look up before laying anything down if they'll work together, or try a test spray on something else or like the underside.

Also, make sure the cleaning solvent used prior to spraying the primer is made for the epoxy primer you’re using. Like @Swims350 said, it’s best to stick with a single line for paint prep/degreaser, primer and topcoat to ensure compatibility.

And yes...alkalyd primer will take weeks to cure. Japan drier will speed it up.

Japan drier? And the funny part is we use this setup at work everyday all day ...in transit electric motor industry..maybe where I got my materials ...and don't have a issue ..our booth is not a force heat booth either ...i am a quality tech for my company so I inspect lots of items and never had a dry time or bonding issue ...but I did use xylene for my prep wipe cause didn't have any IPA...i like the alcohol best but was out...guess that's what u get for ...useing what was given to me ...

if you use the primer at work ad it dries and it's not at home seems weird.

I always heard all those take awhile to dry, and I know humidity plays a big role in it. Maybe it's possible was just a bad batch?

well I come to the conclusion that it was because I use xylene for my prep sol ..which was a bad idea cause it became trapped in primer and couldn't escape ..not allowing the primer to dry ..I am currently stripping it all off and we will try again

Good reason to test on a small area before doing a hood, door, or the entire vehicle. A buddy of mine suggests getting an old door or fender from a junkyard, taking it down to bare metal, and then experimenting on it.

Would have been good idea cause had got new fenders any way ..but she is all done now
