This power steering issue has been making me crazy for some time. I asked a shop to fix it and they put a new pump on but it still didn't work. Then I put another new pump on and it still didn't work. Now another shop has put yet another one on. Originally the pump had a plastic cap about 1.5" or so but the newer pumps have had the smaller fill neck coming off the top. Napa has no cap for this size that they could find. The shop today says the new pump is working but it should have a reservoir of some sort and for the moment it's just got a tube over the top. I don't recall it ever having a reservoir so I'm at a loss. Does anybody know if it in fact should've had a reservoir all along and which one I need to have the shop install? This should be so simple and yet everybody (including myself) has failed to fix it. Thanks so much in advance.

The separate reservoir is usually on the heavier trucks. But yes it is indeed a thing, would either mount to the alt bracket or core support I believe.

There is a few different reservoirs for different configurations of accessories. You probably need a different reservoir with a cap on that set up.
If it has hydro assist brakes it needs one with two return ports. Some look the same but have the returns pointing the wrong way, some are a little bit wider... I am unsure if you will be able to find a "brand new" one that is totally correct. Maybe you should go back to the shop that took the original one off and get it back, and put a new pump into it.
