Hello,
My intro, to say the least, was the worst I have ever read. So, let me try this again, if I may, and thank you. I have a 1986 C20 with what I believe, due to the #'s stamped on the block by the alternator, is a 400 out of a 1979 G30 van. 6 days after purchase timing chain slipped off. I decided to take the pan off to check things out and found the screen covered with plastic pieces. I know that it was not good but what is it that broke? The timing gears I took off were not of nylon teeth. What else could it be?

Welcome from Central NC. Those nylon tooth coverings tend to jettison from the gears & find their way to the strainer. Does wonders for variable timing as well!

Could be from the plastic connector from the oil pump and shaft

Welcome from MS.

My bet is it is timing gear nylon, the gears themselves were not nylon just a nylon coating to make them silent, but the nylon eventually comes off, then the gear has too much clearance, and you end up with plastic in the pan
