Part Numbers for a complete Steering Shaft Rebuild

I had to replace a lot of parts on my steering shaft, so I figured I would share what I found out. It turns out a company called Omix-Ada makes a few steering shaft parts advertised for Jeeps - well they work for us too. So here is what I discovered:

If you want to rebuild the rag joint use
Dorman Help! 31000 - approx $8.50
You must be registered for see images attach


If you want to replace the upper boot use:
Omix-Ada 18018.01 - Approx $5.00 (search eBay for this price)
You must be registered for see images attach


If you want/need to replace the square coupler bearings in the upper shaft use:
Omix-Ada 18018.08 (this is for a pair) - I paid $1.42 for a set (eBay) but prices can range up to $20.00
(Left side are the old ones - see why I replaced them? - right side are new)

So for under $15 I totally rebuilt my intermediate shaft to like-new condition! The only part I did not replace is the coupler-bearing retaining spring, but I'm pretty sure you can get those too - again likely from Omix-Ada. Keep in mind the parts will likely be advertised as fitting mid-80s jeeps - but they works good for us too!

Great info thank you just wondering I gave the 31000 in my hands did you just dream out the holes in rubber to fit it's about 1/2 hole off for my

Woah dude, thread back from the dead! This might actually be one of my first!

As to the parts... I don't recall having to drill or ream anything out. As far as I remember it all went together pretty easy. I did it in my living room (hence the fancy ass table that doesnt exist any more in the pic) so I would not have been drilling.

I will say though that the omix boot did not last. It's still installed now, seven years later, but boy is it shot. The rag joint is ok, although it's pretty soaked through with PS fluid so any deterioration is not totally its fault. As far as I know the square coupler bearings are still good. I've had no issues.

As much as I hate to resurrect an old thread did you have to drop the steering gear box to get the intermediate shaft out? I am trying to replace mine because some ******* drilled and bolted it together instead of having the plastic inserts. I don't see enough wiggle room to get it out.

As much as I hate to resurrect an old thread did you have to drop the steering gear box to get the intermediate shaft out? I am trying to replace mine because some ******* drilled and bolted it together instead of having the plastic inserts. I don't see enough wiggle room to get it out.

Pull out that bolt, unbolt the rag joint and the column joint, collapse the shaft where the extra bolt is and take it out. Easy peasy! I can understand why they replaced the plastic with the bolt, regardless of how dangerous it is. The plastic can wear out and cause issues and it can make it hard to collapse the shaft, but by installing the bolt you basically turn your steering column into a pike aimed right at your chest in a front-end collision. Not fun.

I could not get it to collapse with the bolt out and after drenching it overnight in pbblaster. I just tossed it and replaced with an intermediate shaft from the junkyard with the plastic intact.
