So it looks like Sams Club has a Deka/East Penn Made in USA battery for $103, which is a LOT cheaper than everywhere else, if that's not junk...Walmart is only $88 (both 3 year batteries) but I can't find out the manufacturer of it. From more and more poking around it seems like Deka is better than Johnson Controls at this point? Also seems like Optima has quality issues, and wouldn't be a great fit for the 1987 charging system anyway...which is good for the wallet...
east penn makes NAPA and Deka. what group size for square did you look up? east penn makes farm and fleet batteries and they have similar costs on most batteries, 89 on sale i think they just about get down to

I may have the terminology wrong, but I believe it's "equalizing."

Basically, controlled overcharging of the battery reverses the sulfur reaction and restores the battery, somewhat. Modern electronically controlled chargers probably have programmed settings, but the old school way is a charger big enough to overcharge the battery while you watch the temperature to prevent plate buckling.

I have a lot of experience in ruining batteries. Either overcharging them or discharging them to the point where they sulfate. If you want to learn about battery failure modes and their potential remedies, it comes with a high tuition.
I learned how if a battery was making your shed feel like a WWI gas attack you shouldnt go put it on the tractor and try to turn the ignition switch because where you stood doesnt allow acid to hit you but your ear is gonna regret that and what if you stood a foot to the right or the fender were not there? happy anxieties

Yep, they gas when you cook 'em. Do it in a well ventilated area.

Just was telling Frankenchevy I had a new Deka that was installed the day I got my 84 in April. Was dead by October. Maybe it was a fluke and im sure if i had the receipt they'd a warrantied it( po bought it the day i bough the truck and didnt think to give me the receipt) But sure enough it was toast
the only Deka on shelves around me are parts stores who are in towns of 3 people and a cow. they are on the shelf for MONTHS before used

Ok people, its buttered toast on a cat time.
@Ricko1966

Here we go....
So the cat is stuck in a box with the with butter and the bread. You cant see the cat. You drop the box from a helicopter in to the middle of the pacific ocean. Does the cat eat the bread...Asking for a friend.
