Opinions on Ring and Pinion brand?

So, this weekend im gonna drop some cash on a master install ring and pinion set for my suburbans rear end.

Looking at ebay, theres motive gear, which ive heard good **** about, and richmond.


Opinions?


Price difference isnt enough to matter really. Just wondering peoples thoughts.

I'll be doing the regear and overhaul myself.

Didnt see yukon in a master install on fleabay for some reason. Id rather go with them.
Was wondering if theres any particular advantage to the slightly more pricey motive brand.

I used Richmond on my 78 k10 12 bolt. No complaints.
Also there two versions of Richmond. I believe excel is the cheaper one.

I had never heard of Motive brand before. The picture in your original post doesn't show a brand name for the top set, at least on my monitor.

Been running Yukon in my Chevelle SS for a few years now, pinion to axles, and they are holding up well.

Real GM gears are the quietest, but expensive. When properly installed, they will easily last 200K miles.

If you do some research, you'll find that Richmond gears are noisy, but good quality. SVL is a Dana/Spicer entry level brand, but they get good reviews on car & truck forums.

Whatever brand R&P you choose, be sure to use name brand bearings like Koyo, SKF, or Timken. You never know what kind of bearings and seals those low-priced kits use. I'd also suggest a spacer & shim kit instead of using a crush sleeve.

Finally, I would personally not buy R+P components on eBay, unless the seller is well known and is competent enough to support you after the sale. I really like Randy's Ring & Pinion and their line of Yukon YK-series gears, and their tech support is first-rate. All they do is axle components, or at least it used to be that way.

I have been running Motive Gear 4.10s front and rear for a couple of years now with no issues or noise and they are made in Italy. While I was in there I swapped out the differentials for the Eaton true tracs along with the timkin bearing seal kit.

Thanks for the input everyone, i purchased a richmond master install set and the needed 40 and 15 tooth speedo gears

Ill be doing the regear i guess in Jan, since it arrives towards the end of Dec.

Just finished installing a Yukon 3.73 set yesterday. My first time and after a 20 mile break in/test spin I’m happy as a puppy with two peters!
