Hey, I'm old and I'm new at the same time. My name is Alex and I live in the Columbus OH metro area. I'm 62, retired from the US Navy, and have owned many, many classics over the years, including a couple of Squarebody Sooberbuns. I have a 7 yr-old son from my much younger wife, and life ain't too damned shabby.

I have an '83 GMC shortbed stepside that I'm changing from a 350 SBC with a TH-350 tranny to a 250 six with a 3-speed manual (its original drivetrain). I'll post up pics of the changeover in the appropriate section of this forum, as well as explain to you why I would do something that strange, when everyone else is swapping their sixes for V8s.

It's nice to be on here and I chose this over the other forums because this seemed the least restrictive (their lists of restrictions and rules were entirely too long to read).

a v8 to l6 is natural as
SIX IN A ROW, READY TO TOW

EIGHT IN A V, YOUR OLD LADY IS COMING HOME WITH ME

250 sounds perfect. literally, and wil work great. I recommend a sm465 tho.. forgo the complicated column shifting and swap for trans that are okay

Welcome fellow Buckeye. I'm Northwest of you near Wapakoneta. Nice truck. Love the 250 with Saginaw 3 speed.

Howdy neighbor! I'm just a little bit SW of you. Well, not right now or much of the year, but that's where home is, lol.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful replies. Nice '78, Corvair...it has the much-less complicated 6 (and a powerful 292 with factory A/C is icing on the cake). The 250 going back in mine has a helluva lot of emissions junk on it...GM's desperate attempt to get another few years out of the old Stovebolt. I prefer the 1-barrel 6 to the 2-barrel version...better running and better gas mileage.

And for anyone around Columbus or central Ohio (Darren or Andy), I'd enjoy meeting you for coffee at Bob Evans or Ihop...just drop me a line.
