Hey guys, I have a 1987 Chevrolet R10 Suburban. All original. I have developed an oil leak. It appears to be coming from either the oil filter housing or above it. There appears to be a sensor above the oil filter housing. I’m assuming it is the oil pressure sensor. I think it is attached to the block through basic plumbing fittings. Is this correct? Is this a known problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oil pressure sensors can definitely leak oil. I replaced one a couple months ago that was leaking.

Of course it is. Put some UV dye in the crankcase if you’re doubting yourself, and hit it with a UV flashlight. It’ll lead you right to the source.

Or you can wash the area and then dust it with talc powder.

Could be the back of the manifold to block or where it intersects with the heads. This will leak down in your described areas.

hose down the suspected area with carb or brake clean . fire it up and watch it. a pressure leak like a pressure sensor should show up pretty quick. if that doesn't work shut it off and watch. some leaks wont show with the engine idling because the PCV creates a negative pressure preventing the leak... had that on an oil pan not to long ago.. yes sensors leak and they are 1/8" pipe thread.

don't forget to check the valve cover, they are notorious for leaks in that area

Thank you for all the replies. I change the valve cover gasket. That was not the problem. It is the oil pressure sensor. Thank you again for all your help.

Hey guys, changed out the oil pressure sending unit. Still have a leak. Starting from the bottom I pull the oil filter. Looks fine. Removed the oil cooler filter housing. The base gasket has a tiny crack in it. Replaced it and the other gasket that goes against the block. That’s it. No leak. Lesson learned. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Thanks guys
