I had a 454 before and it seemed to get alright milage but then again it was a faaaaat a$$ tank… if i remember correctly it was something like 25 or 30 gal.

Square does loose 2mpg or so. It will really depend if you will have it carbed, tbi or vortec. I used to also own a 468 with 500+ hp ( had a blower on it) and it got somewhere between 3 and 6 mpg. Start with newer motor, and gear the truck correctly and will not need to change cam/heads. Will result in a reliable rig.

I want to go carb just because I wouldn't need to fuss with all the wiring or anything like that, and carbs are easy but as far as power adders efi would defiantly be better…. what about direct injection? I was thinking about turbo at maybe 20 lbs or boost or just all motor

The nv4500 will hold up to big tq fix the 5th gear problem and use a good clutch
I had one behind my cummins with a twin disc clutch 392hp and 811tq at the wheels held up fine.
also with adapters you can use the nv or gertag 5600
