Hello all


First off my name is Don
and I am a newbie to the board
I am working on putting to gather a 73 step side
it is a stick truck that someone put a th350 in and I want to
put it back to a stick but the only transmission I have is
a NP833OD so I guess question is are they any good
it is going behind a mild built 454 or some what built Sb
I haven't decided yet , it has 410 gears
this is sorry to say is a small budget build

No that 833 is not good at all, you should send it to me to get it out of your way lol. Actually they are great and if I could find one it would be in my truck right away. I'm not sure how it will handle a 454 but if the gearing is right that will help which it sounds like it will be.

The 833 is a good transmission for OD but I've heard its not a particularly strong transmission.

I have read the same thing that they are not that strong
but then you reed and people say just as strong as any
they Basically the same trans as was used in Mopar hemi cars
and with the front bushing addition, should hold up pretty well behind a lot of engines
but a lot people say a lot of things LOL

I've heard they're plenty strong and can be beat on with exception of OD. Reason being, to get the OD ratio, the OD gear that meshes with the Cluster gear is small. I think most of the abuse is going to be on 1st and 2nd so give it hell. Even with 3rd being a 1 to 1 ratio you can still beat on it too. Consider using the OD just for cruising the freeway as it should be, and you shouldn't have any problem at all. Dodge ran them behind 426 Hemi's and 440's so I see no reason it won't hold up behind a Fo Fitty Fo either.

The aluminum case A833 aren't the boogyman they are made out to be. Cast Iron cases are supposed to be tougher but even the Al case units are built like a tank.
Seal up the countershaft plug properly and put the right oil in it (not gear oil) and it'll do just fine.
I had one behind a built 383 in a C-Body Fury. If it would put up with 400HP and 415ft-lb of torque from a Chrysler big block in a 3,600 lb land yacht it'll do just fine in a pickup.
