Well, I've been trolling my local yards and Craigslist since returning home from the big road trip with an eye out on upgrades for my little red '87 (shortbed 1/2 ton with a 305 and NPA833) and I found three local possibilities for a quick and easy swap: Two LT1/T56 pulls complete with ECMs and looms, and one older (92) Z28 350/T5 pull complete.
The early Z28 pull is relatively cheap (well under 2K), still in the car, and I'll be able to hear it run. Car had 90K on it before the ass end was smashed. The later model LT1/T56 pulls are clean and low mileage pulls as well, and have a 30 day warranty, but are $1000 more.
I'm leaning toward a late model lower mileage LT1 and 6 speed swap, despite the higher price, but whatever I pick with be getting at least one turbo eventually. The truck is just going to be a simple hotrod that'll I'll be driving daily and using for fun road trips where we don't need the space of the 'brurb. The only T56 I have experience with was in a Viper. I'm not at all familiar with the T5, but I know they were as prolific as the T56 is.
So, Has anyone put a T5 or T56 into one of these trucks? My concern is getting the shifter sorted out through the stock shifter location. Anyone know of mid or side shift tail housings for the T56 or T5 that'll get me close or right on to the stock tunnel opening?
