I've been trying to track down a bearing noise, which sounds like its coming from my transfer case. I figured I would remove the np208 tail housing and replace the bearing, bushing, and seal. Once I removed the tail housing, the entire tail shaft became loose to the point where I can move it 1/2" in every direction.

Is this normal, or should the tail shaft stay tight even with the housing removed?

That's fairly normal once the rear bearing is removed bud. Usually the bearing that wears out first is the front out put bearing for the front driveshaft.

I took it off originally because my rear driveshaft was wobbling and I had a bearing sound in the TC, problem Is the tail shaft bearing looks good to me, I'm going to replace it anyways
