Shawn, I just bought a 1981 C20. It clanked and clunked, and drove me nuts. I thought the tailgate or bed was about to fall off, but it wasn't rattling when shaken; it was all solid. Pushed down on the bumper and rattles galore. So I removed the spare tire hanger because I don't have a tire for it yet. That helped some. After that I decided to push up on the bottom of the truck. That revealed the problem! Both upper shock mounts were loose as a goose and making all kinds of racket. I drove it without shocks for a few days until I got paid, that was fun yet way too bouncy and I don't recommend for the faint of heart. Slapped some new shocks on the back after replacing the top studs with the new ones provided, and torqued them down pretty good. No more rattles from the back unless it's a hard bump that makes the tailgate jump. Hope that helps.
