In an NP203 4-Hi works like AWD systems today. One rear wheel pulls till the t-case senses a slip, then engages the front output. 4-HI LOC is front and rear pulling all the time.

It's not that sophisticated though, the t-case doesn't sense anything. It's just an open differential that sends power to both ends at all times. Since it's an open differential, it doesn't bind on dry pavement. "LOC" obviously locks the diff in the 203.

It would be nice if the 203 actually had a posi unit and still had a "loc" mode. It would be much more useful that way.

Yeah, trying for lamens terms. I looked at the exploded view and it would be awesome if someone made a locker for the t-case diff. It's made like a 14-bolt diff.

You would think that after all these years, someone would have done it by now. There would be a lot of guys wanting to go with a 203 then... I know I wouldn't be swapping mine out for a 205.

Sounds like someone should do some redneck engineering haha. Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering what the difference between the 2 was.
