If anyone else besides myself finds finds GM medium duty trucks interesting, especially the 4x4's, here's some pictures for you. This one is a '19 I believe and the first one I could see up close and touch. All the others I could only view through a fence at the assembly plant.

It's very similar in construction to the older 4500/5500 trucks, but with some improvements. Going back to a truck cab is a BIG improvement over the old, van-based cab. My only gripe is the low hanging transfer case and tie rod. The price on this crew cab model was 60k. I was expecting 70-80k.

I'm interested to know what that front axle is...

I wanna say the older Kodiak/top kick 4x4s were a dana 70 front axle.

That low slung t case definitely caught my eye.

Seems monster truck worthy for such a low sitting case.

The rear tie rod puts me in mind of the Rockwell axles I like to fiddle with. That's really different to see on a newer truck.

Nice to see that they went back to the good old reliable front axles on these, or, maybe they have been like this all along ?
I have worked on the 7000 series 4X4 trucks but I do not remember what axle they were using under the front end.
The Ford 9000 series had two center carrier bearings to the rear differentials. If those drive shafts got the least little out of balance the drive shafts would try walking out of the center carrier bearings, destroying the rubber cushions.
I ran into that problem once, took the carrier bearings over to the local machine shop and let them take a gander attum. The head machinist took one peek and said that the shafts was out of balance. He balanced the shafts and we never had another problem with that portion of the truck. But, it was a ford. :happy160::happy175::happy175:

If I had the funds I would definitely get one and throw a P/U bed on it. These are so much better looking than the 3/4 and 1 tons.

Something like this, but with polished wheels and chrome accents.

Always fascinates me, I try to stock pile as much knowledge as I can on them, idk why. I just do.

Btw, two trucks over was a new Ram 5500 4x4. It was really cool getting to compare them basically right next to each other. The Ram is essentially a very heavy duty pickup. Low ground clearance, front coils, small (relatively) front axle, elaborate steering linkage, full exhaust, bushings in the rear springs, no tilt nose, etc. The GM truck is a full-on medium duty truck.

The older ones were solid axle and leaf springs too, but the 4x4's were so damn rare. I see them occasionally, but I've never been able to pick one apart. We have a fleet of 4500/5500/6500 trucks at work, but all 2wd. They are the '03-'09 years with the van cabs.
